Financial Assistance Program
The Brattleboro Retreat offers a financial assistance program that may reduce or eliminate the cost of your care, depending on your household income and size. Many people qualify for help, including free care or significant discounts. Review the charts below to see if your household income falls within the guidelines for 2026 and learn about options such as discounted care or catastrophic assistance. If you think you may qualify, we encourage you to apply or contact our financial counselors for help with the process.
Free care
You could get free care if your household income is below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level. In 2026, your income would need to be less than:

Low-cost care
You could get a 25% to 75% discount if your household income is below 301%-600% of the Federal Poverty Level. In 2026, your income would need to be in this range for your household size:

Catastrophic care
Ask us about catastrophic care if you owe the hospital a large amount of money, but your income is too high to qualify for free or low-cost care. This program is for people with incomes less than 600% of the Federal Poverty Level who owe more than 20% of their yearly income to the hospital in out-of-pocket costs.
How to apply
- Get an application in person at the Brattleboro Retreat, online, by emailing financialcounselor@brattlebororetreat.org, or by calling (802) 258-6745 and asking us to mail you a copy.
- Fill out the application. Our financial counselors are available 6 days a week to help you in person, by email, or over the phone.
- Give us your completed application. Drop it off at the Retreat or mail it to: Patient Financial Services, P.O. Box 101, Brattleboro, VT 05302. You will get a letter from us in the next 30 days. It will say if you are approved, denied, or need to send more information.
Free language support
We provide free help to people who have communication or language needs, including interpretation and translation support.

State Health Insurance Coverage
The State of Vermont offers several options to help Vermont residents get health insurance coverage. These include Medicaid, Dr. Dynasaur, VHAP, Catamount Health, and VHAP-Pharmacy. Together, these programs are called Green Mountain Care. Each program has different eligibility requirements, but Vermonters with incomes up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level can qualify.
