David Gartenstein
Board Member
David Gartenstein is a lawyer admitted to practice since 1992. Prior to his June 2025 retirement, David worked for 21 years as a deputy state’s attorney, prosecuting child sex offense and a range of other criminal cases. He was in private practice before that, with clients including the Brattleboro Retreat.
David’s legal practice focused extensively on Vermont mental health care law, including its intersection with the criminal justice system. He was a member of the Order of Non-Hospitalization and the Serious Functional Impairment Legislative Study Committees.
David has also spent many years in municipal government in Brattleboro. He was selectboard chair, was a member of the town and high school boards and the development review board, and currently is town meeting moderator.
David lives in Brattleboro with Elizabeth Dunn, his wife of 38 years. Their three sons and one granddaughter live spread out across the country.
