Birches Treatment Center

Birch Trees on Brattleboro Retreat campus

Providing Both Partial Hospital (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) Day Programs

The Birches includes our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP 9:00 AM - 12:15 PM). Most people start in PHP and then step down to IOP as they make progress in treatment. Many participants use Birches as a "step down" from inpatient or residential programs, and other come to us from outpatient settings when conventional outpatient therapy is unable to provide sufficient structure or support. Participants in the program face challenges related to mental health conditions and/or substance use issues.

We are a group therapy program (five groups/day in PHP, three groups/day in IOP). Your social worker will facilitate your first group each morning, and you will meet individually once per week for supportive therapy. You will also meet weekly with a psychiatrist for medication management. In addition, your treatment may include family and/or couple's therapy.

Our groups cover a variety of topics, as the program is designed to address each participant's individualized treatment goals. In a typical week, groups might include mindfulness practice, addressing grief or loss, effective communication skills, self-care for general mental health and addiction recovery, and understanding family history. Topics rotate based upon the participants' needs. We are also able to offer activity groups as a means of supporting your recovery.
