Vietnam Vet Says Brattleboro Retreat Changed His Life

During a Tuesday morning community breakfast at the Brattleboro Retreat on March 23, Marine Corps veteran and former Brattleboro Retreat patient Chris Casey described how his recent experience in the Retreat's Uniformed Service Program literally changed his life. Now age 63, Casey says he has finally found peace from the memories of his experiences in southeast Asia--memories that have haunted him for more than 40 years, and have played a significant part in his struggles with alcohol addiction and isolation from his family and friends.

Speaking before an audience of about 50, Casey recounted no less than four DUI arrests and four failed marriages--all symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression that the Veteran's Administration told him are directly related to his tour in Vietnam.

Far from a laundry list of past failures, Casey came with a message of hope for himself and people like him, about how the Brattleboro Retreat's Uniformed Service Program helped him turn his life around and begin to experience the peace and calm that had eluded him for most of his adult life.
