September 24, 2007

BRATTLEBORO—The Brattleboro Retreat is pleased to announce that Allen Shawn, author of Wish I Could Be There: Notes from a Phobic Life, will speak from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. on Sunday September 30, 2007 at Brooks Memorial Library in Brattleboro. The event is co-sponsored with the Brattleboro Literary Festival.

“This is the second year the Retreat has joined with the Literary Festival,” said Retreat President and Chief Executive Officer Rob Simpson. “We believe this collaboration enhances our goal of reducing the stigma of mental illness. Allen Shawn’s openness about his personal fears and his journey to understand and overcome them is inspiring.”

His books include Wish I Could Be There: Notes from a Phobic Life, and Arnold Schoenberg’s Journey. He teaches music at Bennington College.
