Retreat Physician Earns Board Certification

The Brattleboro Retreat is proud to announce that staff psychiatrist Paul Boutin, MD, recently earned board certification in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Dr. Boutin, who already holds board certification in general psychiatry, was informed of his recent success by the ABPN in mid-December.

This achievement increases the number of board-certified child psychiatrists at the Brattleboro Retreat to three. Along with Dr. Boutin, this group includes Robyn Ostrander, MD, medical director of children’s services, and William Knorr, MD.

Boutin attended medical school at the University of Washington and completed his residency and fellowship at Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle. He joined the Brattleboro Retreat in August 2007.

“As rigorous as it is, the process of becoming board certified helps ensure that physicians focus on the skills and information necessary to provide excellent psychiatric care,” said Boutin. “This really represents the culmination of my training, which began 11 years ago when I entered medical school.”

In order to earn board certification, physicians must study for and pass a rigorous series of oral and written examinations, often in addition to maintaining a busy practice.

"We are all very proud of Dr. Boutin for reaching this important and challenging milestone so expeditiously," said Dr. Rob Simpson, president and CEO. "Please join me in offering him our sincere congratulations on attaining this well-deserved distinction."
